The disparity in family status has long been like a slow-acting poison, quietly suffocating even the most passionate and sincere love. When the barriers of wealth, social standing, family expectations, or prejudice are allowed to come between two people, even the deepest love can easily crumble. It turns intimacy into a burden and transforms shared understanding into suffocating silence. In the end, it is that very pressure that can bury a beautiful love story with its own hands.
Chapter 1
Amanda was a true-born princess.
She had been born and raised in a wealthy family. Her parents were successful businesspeople, and, most importantly, Amanda was their only daughter. Because of that, she had grown up hearing people say things like, “Whoever marries little Amanda someday will be as lucky as a rat falling into a rice jar.”
But Amanda had never cared much for such remarks.
She lived in a world of dreams—innocent, carefree, and yearning for the kind of romantic love she had only ever read about in fairy tales. In her early twenties, she had been raised in such a perfectly sheltered environment that she had no idea how many challenges, deceptions, and hidden dangers existed beyond the walls of her comfortable life.
And so, when she fell in love for the first time, she stumbled.
And she fell hard.
It happened during a long family vacation at a seaside resort. Amanda had traveled there with her parents to enjoy the scenery and escape the routine of everyday life. Yet throughout the entire trip, it wasn't the beautiful beaches or breathtaking views that caught her attention.
It was the handsome tour guide.
Amanda was completely captivated by Barrett's gentle, soothing voice. He was charming, attentive, and remarkably perceptive, and his subtle way of treating her made a girl who had always been spoiled and pampered feel something stir inside her heart.
By the time the trip ended, Barrett had gotten Amanda's phone number.
And that was how their love story began.
Barrett called her frequently and sent her messages filled with sweet words that made Amanda feel cherished and happy. After falling in love with him, Amanda began visiting places she had never imagined going to as a sheltered young heiress. Everything felt new and exciting.
For the first time in her life, Amanda felt as though she was truly living.
Yet fate had other plans.
When Amanda introduced Barrett to her family, her parents flatly refused to accept their relationship.
Amanda cried her heart out, unable to understand why her parents would try to keep her away from such a wonderful man.
What had Barrett done wrong?
What was so terrible about him that her parents were determined to keep them apart?
The more she thought about it, the more resentful she became toward her parents for trying to destroy her first love.
