Chapter 1
Brian: “Hey, how about being my fake wife?” Brian grinned mischievously.
Selina: “Oh, shut up! You idiot! Go home to your wife!”
Brian: “What wife? I’m still a virgin…” Brian burst out laughing, his face wearing that ridiculous, cheeky grin.
Selina: “Being a virgin has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you’re still unmarried… Now get lost!”
By a rough count, this was the 107th time Brian had chatted with Selina—the girl with the funny nickname and an avatar of a monkey shaking its butt like crazy, which never failed to make Brian laugh whenever he thought about it.
Strangely enough, every time they chatted, Selina would absolutely roast him for being such a shameless flirt. And yet, Brian never seemed to learn his lesson. Whenever he saw Selina’s username light up, he would become restless, his heart and guts turning upside down and his heartbeat completely ignoring all reasonable rules.
Could this possibly be what they called love?
Brian still remembered the first time he met her, during an outing with their group of friends.
“Hey, do you know how to solve this calculus problem? Help me with it!”
Selina frowned as she held out a sheet of paper covered in numbers, her eyes looking utterly miserable.
“I don’t know.”
“Liar! You’re in college and you really don’t know?”
“Honestly! I’m in university, not high school. Why are you asking me?” Brian argued shamelessly, his face still glued to his phone.
“Uh… uh…”
Selina stood there with her mouth hanging open, completely stunned by the ridiculous logic of this guy.
But just as she turned around to leave, someone smacked her shoulder with a loud whack, making her wince in pain and pulling her back.
She was just about to turn around and give that insensitive guy—who clearly had no idea how to appreciate a beautiful girl—a piece of her mind, when Brian’s cheeky face popped up again.
“This part equals two. I had to keep pressing the calculator on my phone forever to get it. My finger hurts!”
Once again, Selina stared at him in bewilderment while Brian calmly clicked his ballpoint pen and filled in the answer on the scrap paper. He even carefully laid out every step in neat, professional detail.
That was simply Brian’s way.
He always had to make people hate him first before he was willing to help.
One freezing winter night, while Selina was curled up under her blanket, completely absorbed in a sappy romance novel, her phone suddenly vibrated violently.
A message from Brian:
“Iced tea?”
There was nothing particularly special about that ridiculous message.
What was special, however, was that when Brian sent it, this particular idiot was already fully dressed and waiting downstairs, ready to take Selina out for…
Iced tea!
And so, one person as big as a bear and the other even bigger than a bear—with enough clothing and a quilt practically wrapped around her—made their way in a long, winding procession to a little tea shop hidden deep inside a narrow alley at the end of the street.
It was freezing cold, the kind of winter night that cut straight through your skin and bones. Nobody understood what Brian was thinking when he chose a shop sitting right in the middle of a wind tunnel.
And yes, Brian really did order iced tea.
“Hey! Are you out of your mind?”
“What? I’m perfectly normal. My parents are normal too. Neither side of my family has any history of insanity.”
“It’s freezing to death, and you drag me out here to drink iced tea?”
Selina tremblingly accepted the glass of tea—with ice added—from the shop owner, while avoiding the curious smile on the old man’s face.
“So, are you going to drink it or not?”
Brian glared at her threateningly.
“No! Why would I drink it? I’m not crazy!”
“I’ll ask you one more time. Are you drinking it or not?”
This time, Brian’s voice sounded almost like a shout.
“No…”
Selina sat there in complete silence, her eyes wide as she watched Brian gulp down his entire glass of tea.
And hers too.
The mischievous grin he usually wore had disappeared. His face was now frighteningly cold and expressionless.
Finally, Brian cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted toward the inside of the shop:
“Hey! Auntie! Two ice creams, please!”
Then he turned toward Selina, suddenly grinning from ear to ear.
“If you’re not going to drink the tea, then you can have ice cream instead!”
Honestly, if Selina hadn’t had a bottle of Lavie water to use as a weapon for self-defense, she would have jumped on Brian right there in the shop and scratched him to pieces.
“Hey! Will you be my girlfriend?”
“No! In your dreams!”
“Why won’t you?”
“Look at that ridiculous face of yours—you look like a complete idiot. How could I possibly fall for you?”
“But this idiot is in love with you!”
“But I don’t want to fall in love with an idiot!”
Selina pouted sadly.
“Uhm…”
Brian replied, looking utterly disappointed and miserable, as if someone had just died.
But only for five minutes.
