Chapter 4
She barely glanced at fashionable clothes, designer handbags, or dazzling pieces of jewelry.
Instead, she bought nothing but books.
Cookbooks. Romance novels, from historical settings to modern-day love stories. And, most of all, books about medicine.
Whenever she was with me, she bought them all.
Her little room gradually began to look like a miniature library.
“Hmph! You really don’t understand me at all!”
She pinched my nose when I questioned her about it.
“You know I’m preparing for my medical graduation exam. If I don’t study and fail, I’ll have wasted four years of my life. Once I pass, don’t you dare complain when I start spending your money! I’m just afraid you’ll have to sell your entire fortune to support me. Ha-ha!”
She laughed brightly, while I felt my excitement fade.
I had thought I was different from all those men who had come before me.
Apparently, I wasn’t.
“Don’t worry.” I forced a smile. “My fortune isn’t exactly small. I can afford to support a few more women, let alone just one.”
She looked surprised when she heard me.
She smiled, but somehow, I felt there was something strained about it.
Maybe I was imagining things.
But it didn’t matter.
As long as I could be by her side like this every day, I was already happy.
Because despite everything, I still loved her. I loved her deeply.
And I was determined to bring back the girl she used to be.
“Mia!”
I was startled by the voice calling my name.
“Mom…? What are you doing here?”
I shot to my feet when I saw my mother standing there with the young woman beside her.
Lily—my fiancée.
She stood slightly behind my mother, staring at me in stunned disbelief before slowly turning her gaze toward Mia.
“So this is why you haven’t been coming to the company lately, and why you’ve barely been in contact with Lily.”
My mother pointed at Mia.
She stood quietly beside me, her eyes filled with fear.
“Mom… I…”
“Slap!”
Before I could say another word, my mother struck Mia across her beautiful face.
She stood there silently, slowly raising a hand to her cheek.
“Mom! How could you hit Mia?”
“I’m only doing what she herself promised me.”
My mother glared at her.
“Three years ago, she promised me that if I ever saw her with you again, I would have every right to slap her and drive her away.”
