Chapter 6
Four long, miserable months in the hospital had finally come to an end.
Today, I was finally free.
The doctor told me that the surgery had been a great success. I had been incredibly lucky. On the day of my operation, a kind-hearted person had voluntarily donated their heart to the hospital before they died.
I remembered that day all too well.
I had been writhing in agony, barely conscious, when I heard the doctor telling my mother that my old heart condition had returned—and this time, it was far more serious because I had stopped taking my medication a long time ago.
“Dr. Trần, could you tell me the name of the person who donated their heart to me? Now that we share the same heartbeat, I really want to know who they were.”
I went to see the doctor alone. My mother had gone to the company to deal with some business.
For some reason, whenever I brought up the subject, my mother would always speak vaguely and quickly change the topic.
So I decided to find out for myself.
“Actually, the donor was a young woman. Before she died, she asked us to keep her identity confidential. But I think you probably deserve to know.”
He handed me a file.
“Here. This is her medical record. Take a look.”
My hands began to tremble as I took the document from him.
I could only pray that my instincts were wrong.
Mia — 21 years old — Place of birth: Ho Chi Minh City…
I froze when I saw her face in the identification photograph.
It was her.
The woman I loved.
“I often saw her standing quietly outside your hospital room, crying by herself,” the doctor continued. “When she came to fill out the organ donation paperwork, she kept asking about your condition. She even asked whether, if she died, her heart would be suitable for you.
“I assumed she was simply worried about you. I never imagined that a few days later, she would be involved in a traffic accident.
“She was the victim.
“That was when I finally understood.
“She was truly a kind and selfless young woman.
“So please… live well with her heart.”
My hands trembled as I opened the diary that had been left behind.
Day… Month… Year…
Today, my older brother and I went to buy medicine for Dad. His health is getting worse and worse. I’m scared.
When the doctor gave us the news, I held on tightly to my brother as we walked home. Thank God I still have him by my side.
Day… Month… Year…
Dad’s condition has improved a lot.
I used the money his mother gave me to pay for Dad’s surgery.
I know I shouldn’t have done it. It makes me look like nothing more than a greedy girl who only cares about money.
I miss him so much.
I don’t want to leave him.
But I couldn’t bear to watch Dad suffer while that terrible illness continued to torture him.
I hope he forgets me soon and finds happiness with another woman.
Day… Month… Year…
Dad… Big Brother…
I miss you both so much.
Why did you leave me here all alone?
If I had gone with you that day, maybe our family could still be together.
I feel so lonely.
I miss Dad.
I miss my brother.
And… I miss Mia, too.
It’s been a whole year since I last saw him. I miss him so much.
Why can’t I be with all of you?
What am I supposed to do now?
