Chapter 5
She turned her furious gaze on Mia.
“And there’s something else. You took the money, didn’t you? So why have you come back? Wasn’t it enough? Do you need more?”
“Mom…”
My heart suddenly began to ache.
“I… I don’t understand. What is going on?”
A sharp pain pierced through my chest.
I looked from my mother to Mia, completely bewildered.
What exactly was happening?
Why did I feel as though there was something terrible about to shatter everything I had believed for the past three years?
“How can you still not see her for what she really is? She has only ever stayed by your side for your money. Three years ago, while the two of you were dating, I saw her on the street, acting intimately with another man.
“You told me she didn’t like expensive or luxurious things, didn’t you? It was all an act. The truth is, she only wanted a share of our family’s wealth.
“When I found out the truth, she accepted a large sum of money from me in exchange for giving up her two-year relationship with you. Then she left you and disappeared until now.
“Wake up, Mia! Stop letting this gold-digger fool you!”
“Mia! What’s wrong with you?”
My mother’s words cut into my heart like another blade, twisting deeper into the wound until the pain became unbearable.
I doubled over, clutching my chest tightly.
“Mia…”
Mia reached out to steady me.
“Mia…” I struggled to speak. “Tell me… Tell me everything my mother said isn’t true… Please…”
I forced myself to hold her hand, drawing in a deep, trembling breath.
“Everything your mother said is true.”
Her voice was calm.
“Yes. I never loved you.
“From the very beginning, when I started dating you, there was only one thing on my mind—money.
“Who wouldn’t be tempted by the chance to date the heir to a wealthy company like you?
“It was the same three years ago, and it’s the same now.
“When I met you again and found out that you had become a CEO, I broke up with that other man and found a way to get close to you. I knew you were the sentimental type. Even if you no longer loved me, I knew there was still a part of you that couldn’t resist me, wasn’t there?
“And in the end, I was right. I got exactly what I wanted.
“Unfortunately, apart from these books, I still haven’t gotten anything truly valuable from you.”
“You shameless woman!”
I raised my hand, intending to slap her again—the woman I had loved more than anyone in the world.
How could she say such cruel things so calmly?
How could she say them without even the slightest tremor in her voice?
And then, as though none of it mattered, she gave me a faint smile.
Suddenly, a violent pain tore through my chest.
I could barely breathe.
All the strength drained from my body at once.
The room began to spin before my eyes.
I collapsed to the floor.
And the last thing I saw was the woman I loved standing there in silence.
