Chapter 1

Sophia walked away with a broken heart. She knew that she would probably need the rest of her life to forget this love...

Ruby slowly opened her eyes and quietly looked around.

The hospital room was overwhelmingly white, almost frighteningly so.

The moment David saw Ruby open her eyes, he rushed to her bedside, hurriedly grasping her hand as he gasped,

“Ruby, you're awake, aren't you? Thank God you're awake. Thank you for not leaving me behind. Thank you so much.”

David lowered his head onto Ruby's hand and burst into tears.

The tears of a grown man streamed down his face as he sobbed uncontrollably. Perhaps he felt like a man who had returned from the dead the moment Ruby opened her eyes.

If she had kept those eyes closed forever, he did not know whether he would ever have been able to forgive himself for the rest of his life.

Ruby looked at him, tears slowly rolling from the corners of her eyes. She turned her face away in resentment.

She was still angry with him because of the confession he had made on that rainy afternoon.

David saw the pain etched across Ruby's face. He wanted to say something, but in the end, he stepped back, making room for the doctor to come in and examine her.

Meanwhile, outside the door, Sophia wiped away the tears streaming down her cheeks.

She was overcome with emotion as she witnessed Ruby awakening after coming so close to death for days.

When she saw David turn toward the door, Sophia quickly looked away.

And then she ran.

An walked home along a deserted street. The city was already lit up with countless lights.

She missed David—missed him with an ache that seemed to tear through her heart.

For more than a month, she had not dared to see him. She did not even dare answer his calls or send him a single message.

Every night, she would hold her phone in her arms, staring at a photograph of the two of them taken during a trip they had once taken together. Tears would silently stream down her face until exhaustion finally overcame her and she drifted into sleep.

Sophia knew that during these days, David was suffering even more than she was.

She was suffering simply because she had to leave the man she loved. But David was being tormented from two different directions.

He felt guilty toward Sophia because he had made her fall in love with him, only to cause her pain.

At the same time, he felt deep sympathy for Ruby—a girl who was still far too young, yet had fallen madly in love with him.

David had hurt both women who loved him.

Sophia had met David completely by chance, in what felt like a meeting destined by fate.

It happened one evening when she finished work late. Sophia was slowly making her way home when David accidentally bumped into her.

In truth, Sophia was partly to blame because she had not been paying attention. But David was extremely concerned. He took her to the hospital for a checkup and then drove her all the way home.

He even asked for her phone number so that he could contact her easily in case anything happened.

That was how the two of them became acquainted.

For the week that her leg was injured, he came to her house every day to take her to work.

Their feelings developed naturally and quickly, but Sophia remained very cautious about taking their relationship any further. She did not want to rush things because her heart no longer had enough room for more wounds and pain.
