Chapter 1

Yawning, Orianna stood in front of the mirror, let out a big yawn, and sighed. Today was her first day at work, but why was she so unhappy? Her mood was heavy and depressed—perhaps because she was forced to work in her hometown, draining all her enthusiasm. She tried to force a smile at herself in the mirror, but it didn't look much better. Outside, the gloomy weather with the wind howling through the window in gusts made her shiver. She quickly ran to bed, wrapped herself in a bOriannaket, and winced as her mother kept calling her from downstairs to come down for breakfast.

“Alright, time to get up. Anyway, I can't change Dad's decision anymore, so I might as well just try to work hard.”

Comforting herself, she stepped into the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face. Downstairs, her father had already left for the office, leaving only her mother waiting for her to have breakfast.

– "What were you doing that you're only coming down now? Do you know you're running late? There’s no time to eat anymore. Hurry up and get to the office, because if your father has to wait, you know very well what will happen."

– "Is it late, Mom? Oh, I'm dead."

Snatching her helmet, Orianna frantically ran out to her motorbike. "Goodbye, Mom, I'm leaving!"

Orianna’s mother watched her daughter and shook her head in resignation. She knew that the decision for her daughter to return and work in her hometown was made by her husband, Mr. David. Her daughter completely disliked the idea and had strongly protested, but out of love for her mother, she gave up her dream of working in the city to work in the countryside. According to Mr. David's reasoning: "The government is encouraging college graduates with good degrees to return home to help develop their hometown, so why should the Vice Chairman's daughter run off anywhere else?" As a result, father and daughter had been in a tense standoff for a whole month, but in the end, Orianna still had to return to work at the commune.

Riding her motorbike at 60 kilometers per hour, the rain and wind slapped her face, freezing cold. But not wanting to be late for her very first introduction day, Orianna had to ride fast. Suddenly, from behind, a Dream motorcycle carrying three young men without helmets was weaving back and forth. They overtook her and rode alongside. The guy in the middle turned to tease her:

– "Why are you speeding so early in the morning, little miss? Slow down. People will judge a girl for driving so fast."

Without bothering to answer, Orianna turned and shot him a dirty look, then kept driving. Those guys burst out laughing and revved their engines ahead. Orianna's bike pulled up sharply at the office's bike shed, which happened to be the exact moment those same young men she had just met on the road got off their bikes, pushed them inside, and didn't forget to gOriannace sideways at her. Walking past Orianna, they turned back and said:

– "Little miss, you're here so early. Paperwork is handled in the afternoon, though. Mornings are only for professional work, kiddo."

Stopping her bike and turning around, Orianna looked at those guys without saying a word, giving them another long, scornful glare. The guys turned back and laughed among themselves. The guy in the middle who had spoken earlier said to the other two:

– "Whose daughter is she? So fierce, she keeps glaring at people. It gave me the chills."

Then the guys burst into loud laughter. After parking their bikes in the shed, Orianna went up to the meeting room. Today was her introduction to all the commune officials. Although she wasn't a stranger to anyone, it was her first day at work, so she still had to follow protocol. Walking past the office of the head of the commune police, she saw the same group of guys sitting inside talking to each other. Orianna gave a half-smile and thought to herself, "Probably got called in by the police for a warning again. That kind of delinquent youth riding three to a bike, not wearing helmets, and dressing like street thugs can't be any good." With that thought, Orianna walked straight up to the meeting room.

The guy in the black shirt sitting in the middle earlier happened to look out, saw Orianna walking upstairs, and blurted out to the others:

– "That little miss is heading upstairs."

Mr. Charlie, the head of the commune police, overheard what they said and interjected:

– "Ah, that girl is Orianna, Mr. David's daughter. She's coming to work here today. She majored in economics and graduated with honors. She wanted to work in the city, but her dad forced her to work at the commune, so she had to come back."
