Worrying and overthinking did nothing for a woman, especially a beautiful one. The only thing they produced were wrinkles on her forehead.
“You really are carefree,” I exclaimed admiringly. “No wonder you’ve stayed so young.”
“Yes.” She nodded, acknowledging it. “You have to enjoy life. Whether you’re rich or poor, it’s all a matter of fate. Didn’t the poet Nguyễn Du once write:
If fate has decreed a life of hardship, then hardship must be endured;
If fate has granted purity and nobility, then nobility will be yours.
“So I just let life take me wherever it wants. I’ve sold two houses in my lifetime. If you calculated their value in today’s money, they would be worth more than 1.000.000 USD Yet I’m still exactly where I started—with nothing.
“Even he once told me, after we had already broken up: ‘Every now and then, you should sit down and take a good look at yourself. Other people sell a house just once and their lives change completely, while you’ve sold two houses and somehow ended up exactly where you started.’
“When he said that, I had to admit there was some truth to it. But then again… same old me. That’s just how I am.”
Listening to her, I was utterly amazed.
Could a man like that really exist in this world? Or was she simply making the whole thing up?
“So even after you broke up, the two of you still saw each other, and he still cared a lot about you? Wasn’t he angry with you?”
“Why would he be angry?”
She looked at me in surprise.
“We simply weren’t right for each other, so we broke up. That’s perfectly normal. Besides, I behaved honorably. I knew he had done so many things for me, so even after we broke up, I still helped him complete two sets of final settlement documents for his projects.
“And do you know what? Preparing those two settlement files took a tremendous amount of work, yet I didn’t take a single penny from him.”
I laughed.
“I work in construction too, you know. If you hire someone independently, it costs about two and a half million dong per settlement file. But if you sign a contract from the beginning with a company specializing in project settlements, they only charge one percent for amounts over 1.000.000 USD. Was his final settlement worth more than 1.000.000 USD?”
“More than 1.000.000 USD.”
“Then it would have cost just over 100.000 USD. That means he basically threw away nearly 300.000 USD.”
She looked surprised.
“What company are you talking about? Why have I never heard of them? Do they handle everything, including getting the signatures?”
“Yes! Even getting the signatures. They handle everything from A to Z. The only things you have to do yourself are the construction diary and the site handover records. Every large construction site has companies like that. You were probably just too carefree to notice.”
She fell silent.
As for me, I suddenly realized something: the more beautiful a woman is, the more she tends to believe that everything she does for the man she loves is something enormous and extraordinary.
