Chapter 2
I’ve never really believed in fate.
But I think, this time, I actually experienced it for myself.
A few days earlier, during a break in a friendly basketball game against students from a lower year at another school, I was standing off to the side, drinking some water, when I suddenly noticed a girl.
She was wearing a long white skirt and a short-sleeved plaid shirt, with a stack of textbooks cradled in her arms.
My first thought was simply:
How can someone be that bright in white?
She walked past me, just as she reached a corner.
Then, out of nowhere, a motorbike came speeding around the bend and clipped the pile of textbooks in her arms.
I didn’t even have time to think.
Almost instinctively, I rushed off the court.
When I finally realized what I was doing, she was leaning against me, her body supported by my arms, her round eyes wide as she stared up at me.
Then, suddenly, her face turned bright red.
She swallowed nervously.
And somehow, that tiny gesture made me notice her lips.
I had never seen anyone with lips that small before.
They were delicate, beautiful, and unbelievably cute.
I don’t even know how long we stood there like that.
A few seconds, perhaps.
I could hear the motorcyclist repeatedly apologizing while helping us pick up the scattered textbooks.
Then my friends called out from the court:
“Dieter! What are you doing? Hurry up! The game’s about to start!”
I quickly helped her back onto her feet, then ran toward the court as fast as I could.
There was an unconscious smile tugging at the corner of my lips.
A few days later, I stopped by my cousin’s newly opened cake shop.
He had told me to come take a look.
The place was more like a cozy little café, with a beautiful, peaceful atmosphere.
I had just reached for the door when I suddenly froze.
The girl who had just walked out of the shop looked strangely familiar.
I turned to look at her.
She was wearing a simple T-shirt with the same long white skirt, her soft brown hair flowing loosely around her shoulders.
She got on her motorbike and rode away.
I stood there for a moment before quickly running inside.
I approached one of the employees.
“Excuse me, can I ask you something? The girl who just left—was she a customer or one of your employees?”
“Oh, her?” The employee thought for a moment. “She works the afternoon or evening shift, I think. I’m not entirely sure. She just came in to ask for the day off.”
So that was it.
Maybe some people really are meant to cross paths.
And sometimes, when fate brings two people together, the timing is just right.
