Chapter 3

Ever since I saw him again, I started paying more attention to him.

And, strangely enough, I started paying more attention to myself, too.

I normally never wore makeup, not even lipstick. But lately, whenever I left the house, I found myself putting on a little lipstick. Somehow, it made my lips look more alive.

Just in case I happened to run into him somewhere…

I didn’t even understand why I was thinking like that.

I started waiting for him.

Almost every evening around eight, he would walk into the shop, order a cappuccino and a slice of cake, then open his laptop and settle down to work.

Whenever it got close to eight, I would start feeling strangely restless.

And then, the moment he arrived, I would relax again, suddenly cheerful and completely content to go about my work.

I remembered something my best friend always used to say:

Everyone has a few minutes of madness in their life.

And apparently, mine began that day.

He was sitting in his usual spot.

I was clearing the table beside him when, pretending it was nothing special, I quickly placed a small piece of paper on his table.

I had written:

Thank you for helping me the other day. I’m from B Academy.

As soon as I put it down, I hurried back to the counter and started chatting with my coworkers, pretending I wasn’t paying the slightest bit of attention to him.

A few moments later, I sneaked a glance in his direction.

He was writing something on the piece of paper.

What is he writing?

My mind immediately began running wild.

Is he going to say I’m crazy?

Or ask who I am?

Maybe he doesn’t remember me at all.

A hundred questions tangled themselves together in my head.

Curiosity got the better of me.

So I pretended to go over and wipe the table again, then quickly snatched the piece of paper he had left in the same spot.

His reply was written in neat handwriting:

“You still remember me? Then why don’t you buy me something? ^_^”

I looked up at him.

He was already looking straight at me, grinning from ear to ear.

I could actually hear my own heartbeat.

Fast.

Loud.

Almost embarrassingly loud.

I smiled back at him, raised my hand, and made an OK sign.

Then I quickly darted back behind the counter.

My heart was still racing.
