Chapter 5
Dylan forcefully dropped the roly-poly toy onto the tabletop. It wobbled and swayed for a long time before finally coming to a stop, standing upright just like its initial position. Sunny's eyes widened, looking bewildered, "What is this supposed to mean?" Dylan explained:
— You see. No matter how hard you throw this roly-poly toy onto the ground, no matter how unstable it is for how long, in the end, it still proudly stands back up...
Sunny reached out and took the cute roly-poly toy from Dylan, gently stroking and affectionately cradling it.
— You talk like a philosopher.
— Hmm... My dad used to teach me that.
Suddenly, both fell silent. Dylan idly flipped through the pages of the book he was holding, while Sunny quietly watched the roly-poly toy move.
Suddenly, Dylan spoke up:
— Hey! Want to go get some ice cream?
— Huh? — Sunny looked dazed.
— Let's go get ice cream to cool down.
— Okay! — Sunny said excitedly. — It's been ages since someone invited me out to eat.
— Are you a total glutton? — Dylan teased.
— Glutton your head. Let's go...
Sunny was thrilled. Sitting behind Dylan on his bike, her hair fluttered in the wind, which played with her locks like mischievous children. The two of them chattered endlessly about everything, as if they had been close friends for a long, long time.
The early summer ice cream shop wasn't too crowded. Sunny called out loudly:
— Ma'am, please give us two glasses of Swensen's ice cream, extra chocolate.
Dylan pretended to frown:
— Living large, huh! That ice cream is so expensive it'll kill you.
— Oh come on, ice cream is sweet.
— But look at that menu over there, 60k a glass. I don't know how you feel, but my tongue is already feeling completely dry and astringent just looking at it.
Sunny giggled:
— Serves you right. Who told you to entice me...
Each spoonful of cool, sweet ice cream melted quickly in her mouth, and her sorrow washed away along with it down into her stomach. Dylan sat watching Sunny enjoy her ice cream in such an adorable way, without even blinking. He found Sunny unbelievably childlike!
— Hey. Aren't you eating? Your ice cream is going to melt completely.
— Oh right... — Dylan flusteredly said. — Watching you eat is fine. Otherwise, if you asked for a few more glasses, I'd have to go home, pry open the cabinet, and mortgage the red book [deed to the house].
— Oh! You're teasing me!
Then, acting naturally, Sunny scooped a spoonful of ice cream from Dylan's glass and shoved it right into his mouth:
— Eat this.
Taken by surprise, Dylan didn't have time to react, and his mouth was smeared with chocolate. Self-consciously, he pulled out a tissue to wipe frantically. Sunny rolled over with laughter. Dylan's face turned completely red.
— Kitty Dylan! Heh heh...
— I'm gonna smear all this ice cream on your face now. — Dylan threatened.
Their laughter filled a corner of the room. A few female waitstaff standing nearby had to cover their mouths with their hands...
Suddenly, the door of the shop swung slightly open. A couple walked in. Sunny's mouth, which had been wide open from laughing, suddenly froze as if locked in place. She whispered softly:
— Him!
"Him" was walking alongside Lan, his new girlfriend, hand in hand, looking happy. Sunny's eyes glazed over... Suddenly, that girl spotted Sunny, whispered something into "His" ear, and walked quickly over to the table where Sunny was sitting:
— Hello there!
Sunny forced out a polite, social smile:
— Hmm... Hello.
