Chapter 2
The three young men saw this, nodded, and smiled mysteriously at one another before turning back to chat among themselves.
Orianna's first day at work came to an end. Even though it wasn't difficult or unfamiliar to her at all, she still didn't feel happy about doing a job she didn't love. She dragged herself through a sluggish dinner and went straight up to her room without sitting down to watch TV with her parents. She opened her laptop, browsed Facebook, liked all her friends' status updates and shares for the day, and logged off. As she was lying in bed reading the newspaper, her phone rang. GOriannacing at the screen, she saw the contact name "Skinny Pig 12A":
– "Hello. Speak or lose your money."
– "You little brat, better get your money ready to attend my wedding banquet."
– "You? Did someone actually carry off this grand old maid?" Orianna sat up with a start.
– "Duh, why else would I be asking you to a banquet, you silly girl? It's on the 18th of this month, so you've got half a month to prepare."
– "Goodness, inviting me half a month in advance? Are you that desperate to get married, madam?"
– "Ahem, well, someone was saying I'm an old maid who's still hopelessly single and not a single guy would bother looking at me?"
– "Ha ha, your friend isn't that bad off yet. I just haven't wanted to settle down."
– "Oh, please, girl. Just admit you're single instead of putting on airs. Do you want me to set you up with some of my husband's best friends? I guarantee they're handsome and kind—though not quite as great as my husband, he he."
– "Thanks, but my goodness hasn't sunk low enough to need match-making yet."
After chatting for a bit longer, they hung up. Orianna sighed. So all her close high school friends were getting married, leaving her all alone. With a small smile, she thought, "Oh well, whatever. Time to sleep and go to work tomorrow."
It was a chilly autumn morning. The seasonal winds whistled softly against the window outside Orianna's small room, making her curl up even tighter in her thin bOriannaket like a cocoon, refusing to break out of her shell and transform into a colorful, beautiful butterfly. After calling her daughter for the third time with no answer, Mrs. Mai slowly walked up the second-floor stairs, opened the door, and stepped into her daughter's room.
– "It's almost time for work, and you're still not up?"
– "Ugh, Mom, let me sleep just a little longer. It's so cold out."
– "Your father is waiting for you downstairs. There's a briefing meeting today, and he reminded you to be there early."
Crawling out clumsily, she stretched and sauntered into the bathroom. Just like that, Orianna had been working for 10 days. Those 10 days had flown by, and she was gradually getting used to the life of a commune civil servant—handling professional tasks in the morning and paperwork in the afternoon. Though Orianna no longer pouted every time she had to go to work, she still didn't feel entirely at ease in her heart.
Arriving at the office in the morning, she saw a lot of people already there. It looked like there had been a fight yesterday, so district police officers had come down to handle it today. GOriannacing into the police duty room by the front gate, she saw the guy in the black shirt who had teased her the other day sitting inside, surrounded by several key police officers. She shook her head and thought to herself, "I knew those hoodlums were bad news. This must be related to yesterday's fight. They should just throw guys like that in jail to keep public order."
