Chapter 5
That evening, Felix texted Orianna again. After ignoring many of his previous messages, today, because of what happened this afternoon, she felt a bit more favorably disposed toward him and finally replied. Needless to say, how overjoyed Felix was, quickly texting her back. Orianna couldn't help wondering why, despite his rough and brazen exterior, Felix spoke with the understanding and politeness of an educated person, nothing like the typical street thugs.
Orianna gradually found herself feeling happy when his messages arrived with such gentle and thoughtful inquiries. She wished that if only Felix weren't a hoodlums, she could have considered him a good friend. She constantly encouraged him to focus on finding a stable, honest job so he wouldn't have to endure the unpleasant gOriannaces from people around him. She always showed her disapproval whenever Felix said he was going out with friends, afraid that he might get dragged into social vices. Meanwhile, Felix always wondered why Orianna thought of him as someone respectable or not, but he could never quite explain it to her. Every time he asked her out on a date, Orianna politely declined. In her mind, Felix was not a well-behaved young man; no matter how nicely he spoke to her, she couldn't feel secure enough to go out with him—especially since she had no idea how her father would react if he knew she was hanging out with someone like Felix.
– "How on earth can I get Orianna to agree to go out with me?" Felix murmured absentmindedly while they were on the phone together.
Half-joking and half-serious, Orianna replied:
– "If you can get my dad's permission... heh heh."
– "Really? I'm going to go ask the commune's Vice Chairman for permission to take his little princess out!" Felix exclaimed excitedly.
– "Just try it. Fair warning, it's going to be very difficult."
– "I believe in myself. If you say it like that, you're bound to lose to me. I'll come over to your house tomorrow night."
Orianna hung up the phone and thought to herself, "I bet a million dollars you wouldn't dare come over. Do you know how famously strict and difficult this commune Vice Chairman is? It would be a miracle if a unserious guy like you didn't get chewed out by him." With that, she turned off the lights and went to sleep.
The next evening, while Orianna was washing dishes in the kitchen, she heard a young man's greeting. Hurrying to peek out and see who it was, Orianna jumped in shock. Felix actually came? She couldn't believe he had the nerve to show up at her house. Right then, she was terrified that her father would yell at him and throw him out of the house, and she had no idea how Felix would react if that happened.
– "Why on earth are you here?" Orianna anxiously rushed out to where Felix was standing and greeting her father.
– "Heh, I came to visit you and your parents."
– "Have a seat, make yourself at home, young man."
Felix sat down with Orianna's father and mother. As her father started talking, Orianna sat trembling next to Felix. Her father began:
– "How long have you known our Orianna?"
– "Well, sir, I've known her for a while now."
– "How come the girl never mentioned it?"
– "It's nothing important, Dad."
– "Hey now, young lady, your father is talking to him, why are you cutting in?" Orianna's mother reprimanded her.
Orianna sat on pins and needles, terrified that her father would ask about Felix's "background," but surprisingly, he didn't. Her father, Mr. David, only talked about social and political matters and asked nothing further. Orianna let out a sigh of relief—until Felix suddenly spoke up to ask for permission:
– "Excuse me, sir and madam, the reason I came here today is to ask for your permission to get to know your daughter, Orianna."
– "What?!"
